Tub Surround vs Tile: Acrylic Panels or a Tiled Tub Wall?

The tub surround vs tile question is a choice between factory-made acrylic or fiberglass wall panels and a tiled tub wall built by hand over waterproofing. Choosing between them? Acrylic and fiberglass panels cost less and go up in less time. A tub surround tear-out and retile costs $4,300 to $5,000 in Greater Boston (as of 2026 pricing). In return it lasts longer, looks custom and can be repaired one tile at a time. Back to tile shower vs acrylic for the full prefab comparison, or see our bathroom tile installation Complete Guide.
Key Takeaways
- Panels win on upfront price: acrylic and fiberglass surrounds cost less and install faster than tile.
- Tile wins on life and repairs: a cracked tile can be swapped. A cracked panel usually means a new panel.
- Tile cost: a tub surround tear-out and retile runs $4,300 to $5,000 (based on current Greater Boston rates). You buy the tile.
- Mold lives in joints: grout lines on tile and caulked seams on panels both need care.
- Waterproofing matters most: we roll RedGard behind every tiled tub surround.

Tub Surround vs Tile: Should You Pick Acrylic Panels or Tile?
Pick acrylic or fiberglass panels for the lowest price and the fastest job. Pick tile if you plan to stay, want a custom look and want repairs that do not mean replacing a whole wall.
What is a tub surround?
A tub surround is the waterproof wall covering on the three walls around a bathtub. It can be a set of molded panels or tile set over backer board and a waterproof membrane. Either way, its job is to keep shower water off the drywall and studs.
Feature | Acrylic tub surround panels | Fiberglass tub surround panels | Tiled tub surround (ceramic subway or porcelain) |
|---|---|---|---|
Upfront cost | Low to mid; get a written quote | Usually the lowest | $4,300 to $5,000 for tear-out and retile |
Surface | Solid acrylic, color runs through | Thin gelcoat over glass fiber and resin | Glazed ceramic or porcelain |
Look | Smooth, set sizes and colors | Plain, set sizes | Any tile, color or pattern |
Joints | Caulked corner seams | Caulked corner seams | Grout lines plus caulk at corners and tub |
Repairs | Buff light scratches; cracks often mean a new panel | Patch kits for chips | Swap one tile or regrout a wall |
How Does Tub Surround vs Tile Cost Compare Side by Side?
Panels cost less upfront because they are made in a factory and glued up in fewer steps. Tile costs more because each step is done by hand on site. A tub surround tear-out and retile, about 60 to 80 square feet, runs $4,300 to $5,000 in Greater Boston (as of 2026 pricing). That price is labor plus setting materials. You buy the tile, and plumbing, electrical and glass are extra.
What You Pay For: Panels vs Tile
- Panels: the panel kit, adhesive, trim and caulk, plus a short install.
- Tile: demo to the studs, cement backer board, RedGard, thinset, grout, metal edge trim and caulk, plus labor. A niche adds $400.
- Tile material: you buy the tile and we recommend suppliers. Ceramic subway tile runs about $4 per square foot, and large-format porcelain about $8 (based on current material prices).
- Both: any rot found behind the old walls adds repair cost, no matter which finish goes up.
Panel prices vary by brand, size and installer, so we do not quote them here. Ask for a written price that lists demo, repairs and trim. Then put it next to a tile quote line by line. For more on Boston tile pricing, see our bathroom tile installation cost in Boston guide.
Can Panels Go Over Old Tile?
Some panel kits are sold to glue over old tile. That only works if the old tile is tight and the wall behind it is dry. Press on the tile near the tub and the valve. If it moves, sounds hollow or the grout is crumbling, water has likely reached the wall board.
- Over old tile: less demo and a lower price, but any damage behind it stays in the wall.
- Down to the studs: more work, but you see the framing and fix it before anything new goes up.
We always take tub walls down to the studs before we tile. It is the only way to know the wall is sound.
Lifespan, Cleaning and Mold: Acrylic vs Tile
A well-built tiled surround outlasts panels, because the tile itself does not wear out. Acrylic stays easier to wipe down. Mold can grow on either one, and it almost always starts at a joint.
Acrylic Panels vs Tile Over Time
- Acrylic: holds its shine with soft cleaners. Abrasive pads scratch it. A panel that is not fully glued can flex and crack.
- Fiberglass: the gelcoat can dull, chalk and chip with age.
- Porcelain tile: absorbs less than 0.5% water, per ASTM standards. It does not fade or wear through.
- Grout and caulk: the parts of a tiled surround that need upkeep. Caulk at the tub line needs redoing when it cracks or peels.
Which Gets More Mold, Tile or Acrylic?
Tile has more joints, so there are more places for soap film to sit. Acrylic has fewer joints, but its caulked seams grow mildew too. The bigger risk with panels is water that slips behind a failed seam and stays there. On tile, we use Laticrete Permacolor, a cement grout that resists stains better than old-style grout. A squeegee after each shower keeps either surface clean.
Tiled Tub Surround: How We Build It
We build every tiled tub surround the same way: down to the studs, waterproof, then tile. The tile is the finish. The waterproofing is what protects the house.
- Demo. We remove the old tile or panels and the wall board behind them. Then we check the studs for rot and the tub for level.
- Backer board. Cement backer board goes on the studs, lapped over the tub flange so water runs into the tub.
- Waterproofing. We roll RedGard liquid waterproofing over the board, seams and corners. We do not use full Kerdi sheet on the walls.
- Tile. We set the tile in thinset, level and plumb. A recessed niche is $400 to install if you want one.
- Grout. We grout with Laticrete Permacolor in the color you pick.
- Metal edge. The exposed tile edges get a metal edge trim, finished to match the grout.
- Caulk. Silicone goes in the inside corners and along the tub line, where tile meets a different surface.
Most shower and tub wall jobs take 4 to 8 working days. The timeline grows if we find rot or the valve needs to move. Before you hire anyone, run through our list on how to hire a tile contractor.
Tub Surround vs Tile: Which Should You Choose?
Choose tile for a main bathroom you plan to keep. Choose panels for a rental, a quick sale or a tight budget.
- Lowest price: fiberglass or acrylic panels.
- Longest life: porcelain or ceramic tile over RedGard.
- Most style: tile in any size, pattern or color.
- Least cleaning: acrylic, or large-format porcelain with fewer grout lines.
- Turning the tub into a walk-in shower: that is a full rebuild, at $5,000 to $7,000+.
- Old walls are soft or leaking: open them up either way, which narrows the price gap.
