Cracked Tile in Shower: Repair It Before Water Gets Behind

A cracked tile in shower walls or floors is a break through the tile that lets water reach the layers behind it. Yes, it can be repaired. A pro cuts out the broken tile, checks the waterproofing behind it, sets a new tile in fresh thinset and regrouts. Fillers hide a crack. They rarely keep water out for long. If several tiles crack or sound hollow, the wall behind may have failed.

Key Takeaways

  • Water is the real risk. A crack on a dry floor is cosmetic. In a shower, water runs into it every day.
  • Replacing the tile is the real fix. Filler is a short-term patch at best.
  • The waterproofing must stay whole. Take out the old tile without cutting the membrane behind it.
  • Clusters of cracks are a warning. Several cracked or hollow tiles in one area usually mean wet board behind them.
  • Cost (as of 2026 pricing): single-tile work usually carries a $130 to $500 minimum in Greater Boston, MA.

Why Does a Cracked Tile in Shower Walls Matter More Than on a Floor?

In a shower, every crack is a path for water. On a kitchen floor, a hairline crack can sit for years and do no harm. In a shower, water runs into the crack every day. It soaks the thinset and reaches the board behind the tile.

What happens next depends on what is behind the tile. A wall with a real membrane, like RedGard liquid waterproofing, stops the water at the surface. The damage stays small. An older wall built on greenboard drywall or bare cement board has no membrane. That board soaks up water, and the tiles around the crack start to loosen.

What Cracks Shower Tile?

  • Impact: a dropped bottle, a shower head or a grab bar install gone wrong.
  • Framing movement: studs that shift or a floor that flexes under the shower.
  • Wet board behind the tile: soft board lets the tile flex until it snaps.
  • Poor thinset coverage: hollow spots under a tile leave it unsupported.

A crack that runs in a straight line across tiles and grout often means movement. Our guide on why is my grout cracking covers how to read those patterns.

Can a Cracked Shower Tile Be Repaired?

Yes. You have three options, and only one of them is a lasting fix in a wet area.

  • Filler or epoxy patch: fast and cheap. It hides a hairline crack. Shower water and cleaning wear it out. Use it only outside the spray zone.
  • Replace the tile: the real fix. The new tile and fresh grout seal the spot again.
  • Open the wall: needed when the crack came from wet board or failed waterproofing.

How Do You Replace One Shower Tile Without Breaking the Waterproofing?

You remove the tile slowly and protect the layer behind it. The goal is a new tile with the waterproofing still whole. Here is how we do a single tile replacement in a shower:

  1. Cut out the grout. We use an oscillating tool, such as a Fein, to clear every joint around the tile.
  2. Break the tile from the center. We work toward the edges so the tiles next to it stay intact.
  3. Scrape off old thinset. We stop before we cut into the board or the membrane.
  4. Check the surface. If the RedGard layer is nicked, we patch it with fresh RedGard and let it cure. If the board is soft and wet, we stop. That is a bigger repair.
  5. Set the new tile. We back-butter it, set it in fresh thinset, and keep it flush with its neighbors.
  6. Regrout and seal the corners. We regrout with Laticrete Permacolor matched to your grout. Corners and changes of plane get silicone, not grout.

Finding a Matching Tile

You buy the replacement tile, and we help you find it. Bring a broken piece to the tile store so they can match the size, color and thickness. Check your basement or garage for spare tiles from the original job. If the tile is no longer made, an accent tile replacement can make the repair look planned. Replacement porcelain tile is harder to cut than ceramic. It needs a diamond blade, so we bring the right saw.

When Does a Crack Mean the Wall Behind Has Failed?

A crack means the wall has failed when more than one tile is involved. One cracked tile from an impact is usually just a tile problem. Several cracked, loose or hollow tiles in one area point to wet board behind them.

  • Hollow sound when you tap the tiles around the crack.
  • Tiles that flex or move when you press on them.
  • Crumbling grout in the same area, even after regrouting.
  • Bubbled paint or soft drywall on the other side of the shower wall.
  • A musty smell that cleaning does not remove.

If you see these signs, read our guide on a shower leaking behind wall. In our experience, swapping one tile on a wet wall only buys a few months. We open a defined section instead, from corner to corner or from the floor to a clean grout line. We replace the wet board with cement board and roll on RedGard. Then we tile the section to match.

Single Tile vs Section Repair

  • Single tile: one cracked tile, solid wall, no hollow spots. Done in a short visit.
  • Section repair: several bad tiles, soft or wet board. It takes longer but removes the cause.
  • Full retile: wet board across the whole shower. Priced like a new shower.

How Much Does It Cost to Replace Shower Tiles?

The cost depends on how much of the wall has to come off. These ranges are based on current pricing in the Boston area.

Repair

When it fits

Typical cost (as of 2026 pricing)

Single tile replacement, regrout with Laticrete Permacolor

One or two cracked tiles, solid wall

$130 to $500 minimum

Regrout around the repair with Permacolor

Grout cracked near the damage

$5 to $24 per sq ft

Section rebuild with cement board and RedGard

Wet board behind several tiles

$10 to $50 per sq ft

Full retile with RedGard walls and a Schluter Kerdi tray

Wet board across the shower

$15 to $40 per sq ft

Most repairs take 1 to 3 days, depending on scope and cure time. A full shower retile takes 4 to 8 days. Replacement ceramic runs about $4 per square foot and porcelain about $7 per square foot, based on current material prices. You pay for the tile directly, and we supply the thinset, grout and waterproofing.

Can You Use a Shower With a Cracked Tile?

For a few days, yes, if the crack is small and the tiles around it are solid. Keep the spray off that spot and dry the wall after each shower. If the tile is loose, missing pieces, or sounds hollow, stop using the shower until it is fixed. In winter, big swings in heat and cold stress grout and caulk. Small cracks open faster.

Fix the Crack Before the Wall Gets Wet

A cracked tile in shower walls is a small repair if you catch it early. Waiting lets water soak the board behind it, and then the job gets bigger. The Tile Council of North America guidelines explain why a sealed membrane behind wet-area tile matters so much.

Aguirre Modern Tile has repaired showers across Greater Boston since 2016. We are a registered Massachusetts home improvement contractor (HIC #655072), fully insured with $1M liability coverage. We recommend fixing a cracked shower tile within weeks, not months.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a cracked shower tile be repaired?▾
Yes. The lasting fix is to cut out the cracked tile, check the waterproofing behind it, set a new tile in fresh thinset and regrout. Fillers and epoxy patches only hide the crack and wear out fast in a wet shower.
How do you fix a broken tile in a shower?▾
A pro cuts out the grout, breaks the tile from the center out, scrapes the old thinset without cutting the membrane, patches any nicked waterproofing, sets a new tile and regrouts. Corners get silicone instead of grout.
Is a cracked tile in a shower a big deal?▾
It can be. Water runs into the crack every day and reaches the board behind the tile. On a wall with no membrane, that board soaks up water and the tiles around it start to loosen.
How much does it cost to replace one shower tile?▾
As of 2026 pricing in Greater Boston, single-tile work usually carries a $130 to $500 minimum. If the board behind is wet, a section rebuild runs $10 to $50 per square foot.
What if I cannot find a matching tile?▾
