Cracked Tile Repair: Replace One Tile or Fix the Cause?

Cracked tile repair is the work of removing a broken tile, resetting a new one in fresh thinset and regrouting the joints around it. If one tile cracked from a dropped pan, a single replacement fixes it. If cracks run across several tiles in a line, the floor or slab underneath is moving. Single-tile work usually carries a $130-$500 minimum (as of 2026 pricing).

Key Takeaways

  • One crack, one cause: a single cracked tile from an impact is a simple swap.
  • Cracks in a line mean movement. Replacing those tiles without fixing the floor means they crack again.
  • Cost: most contractors charge $130-$500 minimum for single-tile work. Larger repair areas run $10-$50 per sq ft at current rates in Greater Boston.
  • Hollow tiles are next: a dull sound when tapped means the tile has lost its bond.
  • Uncoupling prevents most cracks. We set floors over Strata Mat to absorb movement.

This guide is part of our cracked tile repair Complete Guide series on shower and tile repair. Aguirre Modern Tile has repaired floors, walls and showers across Greater Boston, MA since 2016. The first question on every repair is the same: what made the tile crack?

Cracked Tile Repair: Should You Replace One Tile or Fix the Cause?

Replace one tile when the cause was a one-time impact. Fix the cause first when cracks follow a line, keep spreading or come with hollow tiles. The crack pattern tells you which one you have.

Signs it is just the tile

  • One tile cracked, often with a chip or star pattern from an impact.
  • The crack stops at the grout line.
  • The tiles around it sound solid when tapped.

Signs it is the floor or wall

  • Cracks run straight across several tiles, often in a line.
  • New cracks appear over months.
  • Grout is cracking along the same line.
  • Tiles sound hollow or rock when you step on them.

What Is Cracked Tile Replacement Cost?

Cracked tile replacement cost starts at the contractor minimum. Most contractors charge $130-$500 minimum for single-tile work, based on current material prices and labor. Removing one tile without damaging its neighbors takes careful work with an oscillating tool and chisel.

  • Replacement ceramic tile: about $4 per sq ft in material.
  • Replacement porcelain tile: about $7 per sq ft. Porcelain is harder to cut and needs a diamond blade.
  • Thinset for resetting: about $1 per sq ft.
  • Larger repair areas: $10-$50 per sq ft, depending on what is found underneath.

You supply the replacement tile, and we recommend suppliers that can help match it. Have a cracked kitchen or bathroom floor tile? Get a free estimate for your cracked floor tile: send a photo of the crack and the floor around it for a same-day quote.

How Do Pros Replace a Single Cracked Tile?

Pros replace a single cracked tile by cutting it out from the center, so the tiles around it never take a hit. Grout cure time, not the tile swap, decides when you can use the floor again. Here is the order we follow.

  1. Cut out the grout. We remove the grout around the cracked tile with an oscillating tool. This frees the tile from its neighbors.
  2. Break the tile from the middle. We score or drill the center and chisel outward toward the edges. Working from the middle keeps the force away from good tiles.
  3. Clean the bed. We scrape the old thinset down flat. A high spot left behind makes the new tile sit proud.
  4. Check the floor. With the tile out, we can see the substrate. Loose backer board or a slab crack shows up here.
  5. Set the new tile. We back-butter the tile and set it in fresh thinset for full coverage, level with its neighbors.
  6. Regrout and seal. We grout with a color matched to the existing joints and seal cement grout once it cures.

Repairs in a wet area take one more step. Before any tile goes back in a shower, we make sure the waterproofing behind it is intact.

Can You Fix a Cracked Tile Without Replacing It?

Sometimes, but only for a cosmetic hairline crack on a tile that is still solid. A color-matched epoxy filler can hide a fine crack in the glaze. It does not stop movement, and it does not stop water in a shower.

  • Good fit: a hairline crack on a wall tile or a low-traffic floor that sounds solid.
  • Poor fit: a crack that has separated, a raised edge you can feel, or any crack in a wet area.
  • Poor fit: a crack in a line across several tiles. The movement will crack the filler too.

In our experience, filling works best as a stopgap until you find a matching tile. Replacement is the permanent repair.

What About Loose and Hollow Floor Tiles?

Loose and hollow tiles have lost their bond to the floor below. Tap the floor with a coin or a screwdriver handle. A solid tile clicks. A hollow tile gives a dull, low sound.

One or two hollow tiles can be lifted, scraped clean and reset in fresh thinset. A large hollow area is a different problem. It often means poor thinset coverage, moisture or a failing substrate under the whole floor.

  • Poor coverage: tile set on spots of thinset instead of full coverage.
  • Moisture: water from a leak or a damp slab breaks down the bond.
  • Tenting: tiles pushing up in a ridge because the floor had no room to move.

Hollow tiles crack under load sooner or later. Fix them before they break, while you can still reuse the original tile.

How Do You Repair Cracked Tile in a Shower?

Cracked tile in a shower needs fast attention. Water gets through the crack and into the wall or floor behind it. The longer it runs, the bigger the repair.

We start by checking the wall around the crack. If the tiles sound solid and the wall is firm, we replace the tile and regrout the joints around it. Our guide to regrouting shower joints covers that part of the work.

  • Soft wall or hollow tiles nearby: water is already behind the tile. See our guide on a shower leaking behind wall.
  • Cracked floor tile in the shower: check the pan. Read about shower pan leak repair.
  • Opened wall: when we open a wall, we waterproof the repair with RedGard before new tile goes up.

On shower floors, we rebuild with a Schluter Kerdi foam tray or a mud pan. We connect the Kerdi drain ourselves. Only moving a drain or valve goes to the plumber.

Why Do Tiles Crack?

Most tiles crack because the floor under them moves. Tile and grout are rigid. When the subfloor flexes or a slab cracks, the tile breaks along the same line.

  • Subfloor flex: joists that bounce or plywood that is too thin for tile.
  • Slab cracks: a crack in a concrete basement slab telegraphs up through the tile.
  • No uncoupling membrane: tile set straight onto plywood or concrete takes every bit of movement.
  • Missing movement joints: according to the Tile Council of North America (TCNA) Handbook, tile needs movement joints at the perimeter and at changes of plane.
  • Impact: a dropped cast-iron pan or tool.

Greater Boston adds its own causes. Older homes often have several layers of old tile and subfloor. Freeze-thaw cycles in unheated porches and mudrooms break down grout and stress tile every winter.

Strata Mat vs Tile Set Straight on Plywood or Concrete

  • With Laticrete Strata Mat: the mat absorbs small movement between the floor and the tile. A slab crack stays below the tile.
  • Without a mat: the tile is locked to the floor. Any crack or flex below shows up in the tile.
  • Our setting method: 254 Platinum thinset under the mat, 253 Gold thinset over it.
  • Heated floors: one heating cable sized to the open floor replaces the mat. An electrician runs the circuit.

We recommend uncoupling on every floor we tile. It is the cheapest insurance against cracked tile repair later. Learn more about uncoupling from Laticrete.

How Do You Match Old Tile When You Have No Spares?

Start by looking for leftovers. Check the basement, attic, garage and under the stairs for a box from the original job. Builders often left a few pieces behind.

If there are no spares, you have four options:

  1. Bring a broken piece to suppliers. Size, thickness and color all have to match. We recommend suppliers that carry older lines.
  2. Borrow a tile from a hidden spot. We can pull a tile from inside a closet or under an appliance, then fill that spot with a close match.
  3. Make it an accent. A complementary decorative tile makes the repair look planned.
  4. Replace a defined section. Retile from corner to corner or wall to wall. It looks cleaner than random patches.

Vintage hex floors in Cambridge and Somerville are the hardest to match. Grout color matters as much as the tile. We regrout repairs with Laticrete Permacolor matched to the existing joints, and metal edge trim is finished to match the grout.

Is It Worth Hiring a Pro for Cracked Tile Repair?

Yes, if you want the neighbors left intact. Cutting out one tile without chipping the four around it is the hard part. Porcelain is especially brittle at the edges.

A pro also reads the crack pattern before quoting, so you do not pay to replace tiles that will crack again. Aguirre Modern Tile is licensed under MA HIC #655072 and carries $1M in liability insurance. Send us photos of your cracked tile for a same-day repair estimate, and we will tell you whether it is one tile or the floor underneath.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does cracked tile repair cost?▾
Most contractors charge a $130-$500 minimum for single-tile work. Larger repair areas run $10-$50 per sq ft based on current Greater Boston rates, depending on what is found under the tile.
Can I just fill a cracked tile?▾
A color-matched epoxy filler can hide a hairline crack on a solid tile. It does not stop movement or water, so it is a stopgap, not a fix, in showers and on floors that flex.
Why do my floor tiles keep cracking?▾
Repeat cracks usually mean the floor underneath is moving. Common causes are subfloor flex, a cracked slab, missing movement joints, or tile set with no uncoupling membrane.
Can one cracked tile be replaced without damaging the others?▾
Yes, with care. A pro cuts out the grout, breaks out the tile with an oscillating tool and chisel, cleans the bed and sets the new tile in fresh thinset.
What if I cannot find matching tile?▾
Check for leftover boxes first. Then try suppliers with a broken piece, borrow a tile from a hidden spot, use an accent tile, or retile a defined section.
Is a cracked shower tile an emergency?▾
It should be fixed soon. Water can get through the crack into the wall or pan behind it. The longer it leaks, the larger the repair.
What prevents tile from cracking?▾
A stiff floor, movement joints and an uncoupling membrane. We set floors over Strata Mat with 254 Platinum thinset under the mat and 253 Gold over it.
