Shower regrout cost is the price to cut out old grout, regrout the joints, seal and recaulk a tiled shower. In Greater Boston, MA, the shower regrout cost runs $5 to $24 per square foot (as of 2026 pricing). For a typical 3x5 stall with walls and floor, that works out to about $460 to $2,208.

  • Full regrout with cement grout: $5-$24 per sq ft installed.
  • Epoxy grout upgrade: about $5 per sq ft in material, versus about $2 for cement grout.
  • Sealing cement grout: about $1.50 per sq ft in penetrating sealer.
  • Repair with water damage: $10-$50 per sq ft. A full tear-out and new tile shower runs $15-$40 per sq ft.

Size and grout type set most of the price, and hidden water damage is the one thing that changes the job completely.

What Is the Average Shower Regrout Cost?

At current rates, the average shower regrout lands in the middle of the $5-$24 per sq ft range. Large tile on the walls sits near the low end. Small mosaics, epoxy grout and hard old grout push it toward the top.

Here is our math on common shower sizes, using that range. These are planning numbers for full regrouting, not quotes. Small jobs often hit a contractor's minimum charge as well.

Walls vs Floor vs Full Shower: Which Should You Regrout?

Regrout the floor alone only when the walls are still hard and clean. If the walls show the same cracks or stains, regrout the full shower at once. The setup and cleanup happen either way.

Regrouting shower floor cost

Regrouting a shower floor costs $75-$360 for a 15 sq ft 3x5 floor at $5-$24 per sq ft. Floors fail first because water sits there and people stand on them. Floors also tend to have small tile, which means more joints per square foot.

  • Floor only: best when the floor grout is cracked and the walls are fine.
  • Walls only: rare, since the floor is usually worse.
  • Full shower: best value per sq ft and one color everywhere.

One more reason to do it all at once: new grout next to old grout rarely matches. Even the same Laticrete Permacolor color looks different beside 10-year-old grout.

What Drives the Price of a Shower Regrout?

Five things set the price: size, grout type, removal difficulty, recaulking and sealing. Size is the biggest. The others move you up or down inside the range.

Size and tile size

Price follows the square feet of tile. Joint count matters too. A 2-inch hex mosaic floor has far more grout per foot than 12x24 porcelain wall tile.

Grout type: epoxy vs cement

Grout

Material cost

Sealing

Best for

Laticrete Permacolor (cement)

About $2 per sq ft

Penetrating sealer every 1-3 years

Shower walls, most regrouts

Laticrete SpectraLOCK (epoxy)

About $5 per sq ft

Never needs sealing

Shower floors, busy family baths

Mapei Kerapoxy (epoxy)

About $5 per sq ft

Never needs sealing

Shower floors, wet zones

Material costs are based on current pricing for grout and sealer. Product details are on the Laticrete site. Epoxy takes longer to install and clean, so labor runs higher too.

Removal difficulty

Most of the labor is cutting out old grout. We go to at least 2/3 of the tile thickness with an oscillating tool. Very hard grout, old epoxy or tight joints slow that work down.

Recaulking and sealing

  • Recaulking: 100% silicone at corners, the floor joint and the tub line. Ask if it is included.
  • Sealing: about $1.50 per sq ft in sealer. It protects cement grout for 1-3 years.
  • Grout color seal: a pigmented sealer over existing grout. It is cheaper than a full regrout and lasts 3-7 years, but only on grout that is still sound.

What Should a Shower Regrout Quote Include?

A good quote lists every step, not just a price. Two quotes for the same shower can differ by hundreds of dollars because one skips the caulk or the sealer. Compare them line by line.

  • Removal depth: old grout cut out to at least 2/3 of the tile thickness, not scraped at the surface.
  • Grout product and color: the brand and type, such as Laticrete Permacolor or SpectraLOCK epoxy.
  • Caulk removal and recaulk: all old caulk pulled and replaced with 100% silicone matched to the grout.
  • Sealing: whether a penetrating sealer is included for cement grout.
  • Inspection: a tap test of the walls and floor before work starts, with a plan if soft spots turn up.
  • Cure time: how long you stay out of the shower afterward.

Ask what happens if the crew finds a loose tile or a soft wall mid-job. A clear answer up front protects you from surprise charges. Winter is a good time to plan this work, since temperature swings stress caulk joints and an annual check before the cold sets in catches problems early.

Regrout vs Rebuild: When Is Regrouting Wasted Money?

Regrouting is wasted money when water is already behind the tile. New grout cannot fix a soft wall, a loose tile or a failed pan. It just hides the damage for a few months.

  • Hollow tiles: a dull thud when you tap means the bond has failed.
  • Soft or flexing wall: often near the valve or the bottom rows.
  • Ceiling stain below: water is getting past the tile. See our guide on a shower leaking through ceiling.
  • Pan failure: a damp floor or water at the base of the wall outside the shower. Read about shower pan leak repair.
  • Cracks across tiles: cracks running through tile, not just grout, point to movement. Our cracked tile repair guide explains why.

Compare the numbers. A regrout runs $5-$24 per sq ft over 1-3 days. A full shower rebuild runs $15-$40 per sq ft over 4-8 days, according to our shower installation data. Paying for a regrout first and a rebuild six months later costs more than either one alone.

When we rebuild, walls get RedGard liquid waterproofing. Floors get a Schluter Kerdi foam tray or a mud pan, and we connect the Kerdi drain ourselves. You buy the tile, and we recommend suppliers.

Is It Worth Paying a Pro to Regrout?

For most homeowners, yes. The cost of a DIY regrout is small, but the risk is not. A slipped blade chips glazed tile that is often discontinued.

A pro also tap-tests the walls before quoting, so you do not pay to regrout a shower that needs a rebuild. In our experience, that check is the most valuable part of the visit. Aguirre Modern Tile has worked in Greater Boston since 2016 under MA HIC #655072, with $1M in liability insurance.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the average cost of regrouting a shower?▾
Full regrouting runs $5-$24 per square foot based on current Greater Boston rates. A 3x5 stall with tile to 7 feet plus the floor is about 92 sq ft, or roughly $460-$2,208.
How much does it cost to regrout just a shower floor?▾
A 15 sq ft 3x5 shower floor works out to about $75-$360 at $5-$24 per sq ft. Small jobs can hit a contractor's minimum charge.
Is epoxy grout worth the extra cost in a shower?▾
On shower floors, often yes. Epoxy costs about $5 per sq ft in material versus about $2 for cement grout, but it is stain-proof and never needs sealing.
Is a grout color seal cheaper than regrouting?▾
Yes. A pigmented color seal goes over existing grout and lasts 3-7 years. It only works on grout that is still hard and intact.
How long does a shower regrout take?▾
Most showers take 1-3 days, depending on size, tile size and how hard the old grout is to remove.
When should I rebuild instead of regrout?▾
Rebuild when tiles sound hollow, the wall feels soft, the pan leaks or the ceiling below is stained. A rebuild runs $15-$40 per sq ft over 4-8 days, and a regrout would only hide the damage.
