Do I Need to Regrout My Shower? 7 Clear Signs It's Time

Regrouting is the job of cutting out old, failing grout and packing new grout into the joints between shower tiles. Do I need to regrout my shower? Yes, if the grout is soft, cracked, missing or stained in ways cleaning won't fix, and the tiles are still tight. Here are 7 signs that say it is time, plus 4 signs the problem has gone past grout. Full regrouting runs $5-$24 per sq ft (as of 2026 pricing).
This spoke covers one question. Go Back to regrouting shower tile for the full process, or see the shower tile repair Complete Guide. Aguirre Modern Tile has regrouted showers across Greater Boston since 2016.
1. Grout You Can Scratch Out With a Key
Healthy cement grout is hard. Drag a house key along a joint in the bottom two rows. If grout comes out as sand, it has broken down.
- Where to check: the bottom rows and the shower floor, where water sits longest.
- What it means: water and soap have worn the grout soft.
- The fix: regrout before the joints open up and let water behind the tile.
2. Hairline Cracks Along the Joints
Thin cracks along grout lines are an early sign. Each one lets a little water through every shower.
- Flat joints: cracks here mean the grout is failing and needs regrouting.
- Corners and the tub line: cracks here mean grout was used where caulk belongs.
- Cracks in a line across tiles: that points to movement, not old grout.
Not sure what your cracks mean? Our guide on why is my grout cracking walks through each pattern.
3. Gaps, Holes or Missing Grout
Missing grout is the clearest sign of all. An open joint is a direct path for water to the backer board behind the tile.
- Small pits where grout has washed out.
- Gaps along the edge of a tile.
- Whole sections gone on the floor or near the valve.

4. Mold or Stains That Cleaning Won't Remove
Surface mold wipes off. Mold that comes back within days, or stains that sit deep in the joint, mean the grout is soaking up water.
- Black spots that return after scrubbing.
- Pink or orange film that keeps coming back in the corners.
- Dark lines under the caulk, not on top of it.
Wondering why is my grout turning black? Read that first. Sometimes a deep clean and seal is enough.
5. Grout That Stays Dark Long After a Shower
Sealed grout dries quickly. Grout that stays dark for hours is soaking up water like a sponge.
- The cause: the sealer has worn off, or the grout was never sealed.
- Try first: a penetrating sealer, which protects cement grout for 1-3 years.
- Regrout if: the grout is also soft or cracked. Sealer will not save crumbling grout.
6. Failed Caulk at the Corners and Tub
Corners and the tub line should be caulked with 100% silicone. When that caulk peels or pulls away, water gets in fast.
- Caulk that lifts when you press it with a fingernail.
- A gap between the tub and the first row of tile.
- Grout washing out right next to failed caulk.
We cover where each one belongs in our guide on caulk vs grout in shower joints.
7. You Want a New Grout Color
Regrouting is also the only way to truly change grout color on tile you still like. A pigmented color seal can change the look and lasts 3-7 years. New grout lasts longer.
- Color seal: faster and cheaper, good for a cosmetic refresh.
- Full regrout: new joints in a new color, such as a Laticrete Permacolor shade.
- Tip: regrout the whole shower. New grout next to old grout rarely matches.
Signs It's Worse Than Grout
Some signs mean water is already behind the tile, and new grout will only hide it. Stop and get the wall or pan checked if you see any of these.
- Loose or hollow tiles. Tap with a screwdriver handle. A dull thud means the tile lost its bond.
- A soft or flexing wall, often near the valve or the bottom rows.
- Stains below. A brown ring on the ceiling under the bathroom points to a leak. See our guide on a shower leaking through ceiling.
- Peeling paint or swollen trim outside the shower.
Any of these means the job is a repair, not a regrout. Start with our shower leaking guide. If the floor is the problem, read about shower pan leak repair. Repairs with water damage run $10-$50 per sq ft (based on current Greater Boston rates).
How Often Do Showers Need Regrouting?
There is no set number of years. Grout lasts as long as it stays sealed and the tile stays tight. A shower that is sealed on schedule and caulked at the corners can go a long time between regrouts.
- Seal cement grout every 1-3 years with a penetrating sealer.
- Check the caulk once a year, ideally before winter. Temperature swings stress those joints.
- Consider epoxy grout like Laticrete SpectraLOCK or Mapei Kerapoxy on the floor. It costs about $5 per sq ft in material versus about $2 for cement grout, and never needs sealing.
- Run the fan during and after every shower. Summer humidity speeds up mold in failing grout.
Does Regrouting Last Longer on Walls or Floors?
Wall grout usually lasts longer than floor grout. Water runs off walls but sits on the floor, and people stand on the floor every day. Floors also tend to have small mosaic tile, which means more grout joints per square foot. That is why we often suggest epoxy on the floor and Laticrete Permacolor on the walls. In unheated spaces like a porch or mudroom, freeze-thaw cycles wear grout down even faster.
What a regrout involves
- We cut old grout out to at least 2/3 of the tile thickness.
- We regrout with Laticrete Permacolor in your chosen color.
- We recaulk every corner with color-matched silicone.
- We seal the grout once it cures.
Most showers take 1-3 days. Our shower regrout cost guide shows real numbers by shower size.
Regrout Now or Wait?
If you checked two or more signs, the answer to "do I need to regrout my shower" is yes. Regrouting early costs less than fixing a wall after water gets behind it. We are a registered Massachusetts home improvement contractor (HIC #655072) and fully insured.
