Shower Tile Ideas: 6 Looks for Walls, Floors and Niches

Shower tile ideas are the tile, layout and trim choices that decide how a tiled shower looks and how easy it is to keep clean. The strongest ideas pair one wall tile with one floor tile. Think white subway or zellige walls over a small mosaic or pebble floor. Large-format porcelain, marble and a niche tiled to match round out the list. This guide is part of our shower tile ideas Complete Guide. Below are 6 ideas, each with tips, costs per sq ft and links to deeper guides.
Every price here comes from our own jobs in Greater Boston (as of 2026 pricing). You buy the tile, and we install it with our setting materials. That keeps the choice of tile fully yours.
1. Shower Tile Ideas That Never Look Dated
The safest shower tile ideas are simple shapes in light colors. They suit old homes and new condos, and they make resale easy.
- White subway (3x6 or 4x12): the classic. Ceramic subway runs about $4 per sq ft for material, based on current Greater Boston material prices.
- Vertical stack: the same subway set straight up. It makes a low ceiling feel taller.
- Zellige or handmade-look tile: warm, glossy and uneven on purpose. It runs about $20 per sq ft.
- Herringbone accent wall: adds movement on the back wall. Plan on 10 to 15 percent extra tile for cuts.
- One color of grout: grout that matches the tile looks calm. Contrast grout makes a bold grid.
What Is the Most Popular Shower Tile?
White ceramic subway is one of the most common shower wall tiles we install. Large-format porcelain is just as popular in modern bathrooms. Both are affordable, easy to clean and simple to match later.
Shower Tile Ideas for a Small Bathroom
A small shower looks bigger with fewer lines and lighter colors. Large tile on the walls cuts the grid down. A vertical stack pulls the eye up toward the ceiling.
- Keep one tile on all three walls. Changing tile at each wall chops up a small space.
- Match grout to tile. Low contrast makes the walls read as one surface.
- Use clear glass. Frosted glass or a curtain hides the tile you paid for.
- Run tile to the ceiling. A full-height wall looks taller than tile that stops at 7 feet.

2. Shower Floor Ideas: Pebble, Hex and Mosaic
A shower floor needs grip and slope, so small tile wins. More grout lines give your feet more traction on a wet floor. Small tile also bends to the slope toward the drain.
- Pebble tile: natural and soft underfoot. It has deep grout joints, so seal it well.
- Hex or penny mosaic: porcelain mosaic runs about $10 per sq ft and grips well.
- 2x2 square mosaic: clean, modern and easy to slope.
- Large tile with a linear drain: a linear drain lets the floor slope one way, so bigger tile can sit flat.
See all the options in our shower floor tile ideas guide. For grip ratings, read our guide to non slip shower floor tile.
Should Shower Floor Tile Match the Walls?
It does not have to match, but it should relate. Use the same color in a smaller size, or pick a floor tile that pulls one color from the walls. Two loud tiles in one small shower usually clash.
3. Walk-In Shower Tile Ideas
A walk-in shower shows more tile, so the tile choice matters more. Big porcelain, one tile everywhere, and clear glass keep it open.
- Large-format porcelain (12x24 or 24x48): about $8 per sq ft with few grout lines.
- One tile on floor and walls: the room reads as one space.
- Curbless entry: no step into the shower. It needs framing work and a careful slope. Read is a curbless shower worth it before you commit.
- Linear drain: a long, slim drain at one wall. Compare it in linear drain vs center drain.

4. Marble Shower Ideas
Marble gives a shower real depth that print cannot copy. It also needs more care than porcelain, so go in with eyes open.

- Carrara, Calacatta or Statuario marble: about $18 per sq ft for shower-grade material.
- Seal it: marble needs sealing before grouting and every year after.
- Skip acid cleaners: vinegar and many bath cleaners etch marble.
- Marble-look porcelain: about $10 per sq ft and no sealing. It is the low-upkeep option.
- Marble sill or curb cap: a stone cap on the curb adds a finished edge. See shower curb height and cap choices.

5. Niches That Look Built-In
A good niche looks like part of the wall, not a box cut into it. The trick is planning tile lines and the niche size together.

- Line it up: size the niche so the wall grout lines run straight into it.
- Stone sill: a solid stone sill sheds water and has no grout joint at the bottom.
- Slope the sill: the sill tips slightly out so water drains back into the shower.
- Accent inside: a mosaic or contrast tile inside the niche adds color in a small area.
- Cost: a recessed niche adds about $400 on our jobs: $300 to install plus a $100 stone sill.

6. Best Tile for Shower Walls
Porcelain is the best all-around tile for shower walls. It absorbs less than 0.5 percent water under ASTM standards, so it does not stain or need sealing. Ceramic is fine on walls too, as long as the waterproofing behind it is right.
Shower wall tile | Material cost per sq ft | Upkeep | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
Ceramic subway (3x6, 4x12) | About $4 | Low | Classic tub surrounds and showers |
Large-format porcelain (12x24, 24x48) | About $8 | Low, fewer grout lines | Modern walk-in showers |
Marble-look porcelain | About $10 | Low | Marble look without sealing |
Carrara or Calacatta marble | About $18 | High, yearly sealing | Luxury showers and benches |
Zellige or handmade-look tile | About $20 | Medium | Accent walls and niches |
Glass mosaic (1x1, 2x2) | About $22 | Low | Niches and accent bands |
Porcelain vs Ceramic Shower Tile
- Porcelain: denser, harder and less water-absorbent. Good for walls and floors.
- Ceramic: softer, lighter and cheaper. Good for walls, less ideal for floors.
- Both: rely on the waterproofing behind them. Tile and grout alone are not waterproof.

What Shower Tile Is Easiest to Keep Clean?
Large-format porcelain with a quality grout is the easiest. Fewer grout lines means less to scrub. Small mosaics clean fine on the floor, but they have far more joints.
Grout and Trim Ideas That Finish the Look
Grout and trim are small parts of the bill, but they change how the whole shower looks. Plan them when you pick the tile, not on install day.
- Matching grout makes the tile the star. It suits marble, zellige and big porcelain.
- Contrast grout outlines each tile. It suits subway and hex when you want a graphic look.
- Metal edge trim gives a clean line where tile stops. We finish it to match the grout color.
- Bullnose or pencil trim works on classic ceramic. Check that your tile line sells it before you order.
- Caulk at the corners, not grout. Inside corners and the tub or curb joint move, so they get color-matched caulk.
Shower Tile Mistakes We See Often
- Too many tiles: three or four tiles in one shower look busy fast.
- Large tile on a center-drain floor: big tile cannot follow a four-way slope, so it rocks and holds water.
- Glossy floor tile: it looks nice dry and gets slick wet.
- Ordering short: order 10 percent extra, more for herringbone, so a later repair can match.
What It Costs to Install Shower Tile
The tile you pick changes the material bill. The job type sets the installation price. These are our recent ranges (as of 2026 pricing), with labor and setting materials included and tile not included.
Shower job | Our recent range |
|---|---|
Tile-only shower, walls and pan prepped by others | $3,300 to $3,800 |
Replace a leaking shower floor with a Kerdi tray and new curb, walls stay | $4,100 to $4,500 |
Tub surround tear-out and retile, about 60 to 80 sq ft | $4,300 to $5,000 |
Full shower tear-out and rebuild | $5,000 to $7,000+ |
Bathroom floor plus shower in one job | $7,500 to $11,500 |
Re-grout and re-caulk an existing shower | $700 to $1,800 |
Benches, stone sills and larger showers push a rebuild higher. A niche adds about $400. Tile rip-out jobs carry a $450 disposal fee. Plumbing, electrical and glass are separate trades. For a tub conversion, see our tub to shower conversion cost breakdown.
How We Build a Tile Shower
Every idea above sits on the same waterproof base. Pretty tile on a bad base still leaks.
- Demo: we remove old tile and backer down to the studs and haul it away.
- Floor: a Schluter Kerdi foam tray or a mortar mud pan, sloped about 1/4 inch per foot to the drain. We connect the Kerdi drain ourselves.
- Walls: RedGard liquid waterproofing. We use Kerdi-Band only where the Kerdi tray or curb meets the wall.
- Tile: walls first, then the floor, then niche and curb details.
- Grout: Laticrete Permacolor, with metal edge trim finished to match the grout.
Only moving a drain or valve needs a plumber. A two-person crew sets roughly 100 sq ft of tile a day. See why we pair these systems in RedGard vs Kerdi, and compare floors in Kerdi shower pan vs mud. Day-by-day timing is in how long does it take to tile a shower.
